Hi Ananth, been reading your newsletters right from inception. Why are we paying attention to Global Times? Obviously it's targeted at an English-speaking international audience, which includes Indians. And it uses 'experts' to fortify its POV (are these 'experts' been told what to say?). I would like to see what Chinese publications say to their domestic audience... perhaps that would get a better understanding. GT is unadulterated rubbish.
Hi Srinivas, thanks so much for your comment and for reading, and a great question. I have a somewhat complicated view on Global Times. While I fully agree that we shouldn't overstate its authority - it isn't as authoritative as say Xinhua or People's Daily and shouldn't be taken as the official view - I am also reluctant to entirely ignore it as I think it does often reflect the views of a not important constituency - and especially more so - GT were the original wolf warriors ;). I particularly pay attention to pieces in GT English that also run in GT Chinese, which is fairly widely read. So I'd say my take on GT is somewhere in the middle, and I don't think as a reporter I can entirely ignore it - especially their news pages more than opinion - sometimes they are ahead of the curve on breaking news before official media does, and of course sometimes they get things wrong too! It's a good topic I think for a future newsletter!
